Colour Wheel – Colour Theory (one-day or 4 hours)
Often when we are pulling together fabrics for a quilt, we find it easy to choose a few that
co-ordinate but sometimes we just want something to "spark" it up or maybe something
to tone it down.  By using the colour wheel we can audition some proven combinations
and bring in a complementary or balancing colour.

We will discuss pure hue, pastels, shades and tones as well as value and intensity.  We
will also review the use of light, medium and dark backgrounds and using contrast for
impact vs. blending for smooth transition.

Colour wheel kits are available in the “Prang Colour wheel” (red, royal and yellow) or the
“Ives Colour wheel” (fuchsia, turquoise and yellow).  The kit contains fabric for you to
sew your choice of Prang or Ives Colour wheel. Instructions and templates are provided
to create analogous, complementary, split-complementary, triads, tetrads, etc.  $8.00.

The workshop could easily take a whole day and we would work on sewing the colour
wheel as well; or we could do a half day workshop and everyone could take home their
colour wheel kit to work on in their own time.

Discharging Colour from Fabric
Have you ever bleached something you didn’t
want to?.... well, this time we want to!  Using
leaves, rubber stamps and folding techniques,
create your own patterns by removing dye from
solid black fabric or any other colour.
Discharging hand-dyes is a creative option.  I
can provide materials kits and the “Bleach-
Stop” crystals needed.
Quilt Design Using MSWord  (4 hours)
Use MSWord in a whole new way - design your quilt using the "Draw" toolbar.
Some of the material we will cover:
» Become familiar with using squares, triangles and other geometric designs.
» Learn to size, color and define location of the designs.
» Learn to scale size of quilt to size of page.
» Learn to insert text and import fabric graphics/fabric swatches.
(While we will be working with MSWord, you may be able to use this knowledge with other word processors
that have draw toolbars and functions.  Many use similar commands and methods.)

Each participant will need their own computer and mouse and MSWord.

you can dye at a Colour wheel workshop.
Hand Dyeing
A great place to start dyeing is doing a 12 colour wheel of fat quarters.  You dye the fabrics at the
workshop but they take 24 to 48 hours to cure so you rinse them out at home later.

You create 12 colours using 3 primary hues from Prang, Ives or Fall colour lines. (or shades of each.)
You can get 12 strong hues as well as 12 medium values and 12 light values.
Hand Dyeing an Eternity Quilt

You will dye all the fabrics you need to sew the quilt at the right.  (One day dyeing workshop).  We mix
the colours and dye the fabric at the workshop.  Dyes require 24 - 48 hours to cure so you will take the
fabrics home to rinse later.  Two colour-lines available.

Optional workshop a week or two later... sewing the blocks for the quilt.
Hand Dyeing Other workshops can include a variety of any of the following techniques
» Gradations/values

» 2-colour runs

» Multi-coloured techniques

Workshops can be half a day to 2 days depending on how “in-depth” and “hands-on” participants wish.
If participants have their own dyes, chemicals and fabrics, that is fine; however, I do sell these products
and can supply them for the class.  To check out the price list, you can go to my website:  www.

A Day of Play in the Sun
Using MX Procion Dyes as paints rather than immersion dyeing,
play with some "Helio" or "Sun Dyeing" techniques.  We will paint
our PDF fabric with a mixture of dye and soy milk then place
leaves or other objects of interest on the fabric and place in the
sun.  You can try other methods such as scrunching your fabric,
folding, taping... wherever your imagination leads you.

Shiva PaintstiksSpend a day designing your own fabric or embellishing
some fabric that you already have.
A Cedar Canyon product they describe as, "Shiva® Artist's Painstiks® are oil paint in a
crayon form. They are made of wax, a small amount of low-acid linseed oil, and
pigment. When the paints are not in use, a thin film or skin forms over the paint and
keeps the paint from drying up. Once the protective film is removed, paintstik colors are
the consistency of a lipstick or grease-paint. Paintstiks are solid, but softer than a
pastel or crayon. The solid form of the paint makes them unique in the paint world – you
can use the paint directly on fabric or paper (or any porous surface) or apply the paint
with a brush."
You will love the effect you can create with direct application, rubbings and stenciling.

Screen Printing with MXProcion Dyes – Learn the technique creating your own
“screens”.  We will focus on making the frame and screen then creating unique, personalized fabric
designs with permanent dyes.  Your fabric will have a soft hand and be completely washable when
finished.  We will do the printing in class but you will rinse at home as fabrics have to cure for 48 hours.
A temporary screen is intended for a few uses in one session.  The frame and mesh are permanent
and can be used again and again but the design can be changed.  On the bottom (flat side of the
screen), we place masking tape or cut shapes from plastic or paper.  Once you “ink” the screen, the
paper or plastic sticks to the screen and can be carefully lifted and moved along the fabric.
