Shiva Paintstiks - TBA
Spend a day designing your own fabric or embellishing some fabric you already
have. Learn various techniques to apply Shiva Paintstiks and create the fabric
for a wallhanging, quilt blocks, or simply play with the Paintstiks. You will love
the effect you can create using direct application, rubbings and stencilling.
A Cedar Canyon product they describe as, "Shiva® Artist's Painstiks® are oil
paint in a crayon form. They are made of wax, a small amount of low-acid
linseed oil, and pigment. When the paints are not in use, a thin film or skin
forms over the paint and keeps the paint from drying up. Once the protective
film is removed, Paintstik colors are the consistency of a lipstick or grease-
paint. Paintstiks are solid, but softer than a pastel or crayon. The solid form of
the paint makes them unique in the paint world – you can use the paint directly
on fabric or paper (or any porous surface) or apply the paint with a brush."
Various options for supplies are available depending on your interest and if you
already own some Paintstiks. Check out the available products to purchase
separately, or you can purchase a kit if you prefer.
Some Kits: Santa and the Reindeer, Leaves, Butterflies
Supplies will be available if you wish to purchase additional Paintstiks, patterns or fabric.
Screenprinting with Thickened MX Procion Dyes:
TBA .
Learn the technique creating your own “screens”. We will focus on making the frame and
screen then creating unique, personalized fabric designs with permanent dyes. Your fabric
will have a soft hand and be completely washable when finished. We will do the printing in
class but you will rinse at home as fabrics have to cure for 48 hours.
A temporary screen is intended for a few uses in one session. The frame and mesh are
permanent and can be used again and again but the design can be changed. On the bottom
(flat side of the screen), we place masking tape or cut shapes from plastic or paper. Once
you “ink” the screen, the paper or plastic sticks to the screen and can be carefully lifted and
moved along the fabric. Please don’t confuse this technique with the “Permanent” screens
that are produced with photo/light sensitive exposure on special film or you can order them
from custom/commercial suppliers.
I will supply an equipment list of items you will need to bring or options you may want to
include.
Kit includes 8 fat quarters of prepared fabric (pre-soaked in soda ash); sodium alginate, MX
Procion Dye, and materials to make 2 small frames:
$46.00 kit includes Pimatex or
$42.00 kit includes Kona fabric.
(Robert Kaufman Pimatex is a finer weave than Kona. Both are beautiful for piecing but if you
use the fabric for hand appliqué, Kona is a little heavy).
Supplies will be available if you wish to purchase additional dyes, fabric and chemicals.
Hand-Dyeing a 12-step Colour Wheel. - TBA
I highly recommend this class for a first time dyeing experience.-- everyone gains an understanding of
mixing dye as well as the colour runs between each primary colour and the gradations of creating darker
or lighter values. This workshop provides a basic understanding of many techniques. You will dye your
fabrics in class and place them in zip-lock bags. The dye needs to cure for a minimum of 24 hours so you
will be rinsing it at home.
You will create 12 fat quarters (or you can do half-meters) in a Colour Wheel with 6 colour-line options:
Prang, Prang Shades, Ives, Ives Shades, Fall or Fall Shades. In addition, with the same dye kit, you can
choose to ALSO dye 12 fat quarters of medium intensity and/or 12 fat quarters of light intensity. For
every set of 12 fat quarters you wish to dye, you will require 3 meters of fabric. (If you choose half-meters,
you will need 6 meters of fabric for each set of 12.)
Colour wheel dye kits are available for $17.00 and your choice of PFD (prepared for dyeing) fabric.
45” wide Kona is $10.00 per meter
45” Pimatex is $12.00 per meter and
117” Infinity is $18.00 per meter.

Supplies will be available if you wish to purchase additional dyes, fabric and chemicals.
