Discharging Dye From Fabric
|
Add something Fun for your Quilt, Clothes and Scrapbook. Fabric artists definitely love it very
much!!
deColourant® is a ready to use citrus-scented white creme: Use deColourant to remove the color
from dyed natural fabrics, such as cotton, silk, wool, or linen. deColourant also works on many
papers. It will remove the dyed color and leave the natural undyed color of the item. We strongly
recommend that before you begin any project you test a scrap first.
How does deColourant work? deColourant is activated by heat. Nothing happens until you heat the
deColourant creme. Apply the design you want. If you do not like it, remove it! You won’t damage or
change your work materials. When you have the design exactly as you want it, apply heat to the
deColourant. The more heat, the more color is removed. You can use a household iron, a heat gun,
or even the sun! When your design is done, simply wash out any remaining deColourant and no
more color will be removed.
deColourant® is non-toxic and safe for use without special precautions. It is safe for use by children
(with adult supervision, of course!) Like any product, normal safety precautions should be followed.
Do not ingest it, leave it for prolonged periods on your skin, inhale it, or get it in your eyes.
deColourant can be washed out with plain water.
deColourant® is inert until heat is applied. Nothing happens until deColourant is heated. You can
apply it, wash it out, etc without activating deColourant.
deColourant® responds to heat. The more heat, the more deColourant activates.
When you are done, wash out any remaining deColourant and the process is stopped at the level of
color removal desired.
deColourant can be applied using a brush, stencil, rubber stamp, or silk screen. Multiple designs can
be layered until the finished effect is achieved. deColourant is not activated until heat is applied, so
any "mistakes" can be washed out with no effect. Once the design is completed, apply heat to the
deColourant, using an iron, hot air gun, etc.
When heated, deColourant loosens the bonds between the dye and the natural fiber, so the undyed
color remains. The more heat applied, the more deColourant is activated, the greater the color
change. When the desired color change has been achieved, simply wash out any remaining
deColourant. The natural fibers are now permanently changed, and no more color change will
happen.
deColourant® is based on the concept of "discharging" color. The color is removed ("discharged")
when heat is applied. Traditionally, discharging has been done thru chemical compounds, mixed by
the end user. These compounds usually emit strong chemical vapors, require special handling, and
have short shelf lives.
- deColourant is not a paint. Paints typically leave fabrics stiff and inflexible, are subject to
cracking and peeling, and will lose their vibrancy over time
- deColourant is not a dye.
- deColourant is a delivery system which penetrates the fibers of the fabric and chemically
changes the bond between the fibers and the fabric coloring

Freezer paper shapes ironed on then sprayed or painted with creme.
Stencils - purchased or homemade
Collect leaves - press, then pin on fabric and spray with deColourant
Combine with Jones Tones Foils or Shiva Paintstiks for further embellishment
My first discharge samples using Black
Robert Kaufman Pimatex and deColourant
Creme. I made freezer paper stencils and
brushed the creme on inside the stencil. The
next step will be to add some Shiva Painstik to
the trees or perhaps overdye or paint.
Compare the above two deColourant samples with the one
below using bleach thickened with sodium alginate then
neutralized with Bleach Stop. It is the same fabric - Robert
Kaufman Pimatex. Corry made stencils out of freezer paper
and used the positive and negative technique to discharge
them.
